Spain’s online gaming sector has reported strong growth in 2024, with the latest figures from the State Online Gaming Market Report revealing a 17.61% increase in gross gaming revenue (GGR), reaching €1.45 billion ($1.58 billion). This marks a year of significant expansion across several segments, driven by increased marketing efforts and a growing base of active players.

Key Highlights from the 2024 Report

  • GGR rose by 17.61%, totaling €1.45bn

  • Active player numbers increased by 21.71%, reaching nearly 2 million

  • Marketing spend jumped 30.36%, totaling €526.3m

  • Betting and casino segments expanded, while poker declined

  • Bingo posted modest growth of 3.96%

Segment Breakdown: Winners and Losers

Betting saw the highest increase, growing by 23.80%, followed by casino games, which rose 16.96%, largely thanks to slot machine popularity. Bingo also experienced slight growth. However, poker faced a 4.99% decline in GGR, primarily due to a drop in tournament poker participation, which makes up over 73% of the poker market. Cash poker also fell by 8.97%.

Increased Marketing Fuels Growth

The surge in activity coincides with a sharp 30.36% rise in marketing spend, broken down into:

  • Affiliates: €56.32m

  • Advertising: up 37.17%

  • Promotions: up 30.84%

  • Sponsorships

This strategic investment appears to be paying off, as more players engage with licensed platforms, and deposits and withdrawals continue to rise by nearly 20% each.

Outlook for Spain’s Online Gaming Market

Despite poker’s decline, the strong performance of betting and casino games paints a positive picture for Spain’s online gambling sector. The increase in player activity, marketing investment, and GGR suggests that 2024 was a robust year for online operators and a sign of continued consumer interest in digital gaming experiences.
