Over 50 Members of Parliament (MPs) and peers are once again showing their support for local charities by taking part in the Betting and Gaming Council’s (BGC) Grand National Charity Bet Campaign. This annual initiative aligns with one of the UK’s most iconic sporting events — the Grand National, set to take place on Saturday, April 5 at 4:00 PM.

What Is the BGC Grand National Charity Bet Campaign?

The BGC Charity Bet Campaign invites MPs to place a £50 bet on the Grand National at local bookmakers, including major chains and independent betting shops. The unique twist? All winnings go to a charity of the MP’s choice. If their chosen horse doesn’t win, the BGC ensures a £250 donation is still made to the charity. This guarantees that every bet benefits a good cause, regardless of the race outcome.

The campaign not only raises thousands of pounds each year for charitable causes, but also highlights the community role of betting shops across the UK. In previous years, the initiative has raised over £15,000, and 2025 is expected to surpass that figure with the growing number of participants.

Why This Campaign Matters

According to BGC CEO Grainne Hurst, the Grand National is more than a race:

"The Grand National is one of the very few global sporting occasions with the power to bring the whole nation together, spurred on by the history, the heritage and the incredible spectacle it offers."

She also emphasized the vital role that bookmakers play in the UK economy and communities:

"Bookmakers are the beating heart of this country’s high streets, generating jobs, taxes and crucial investment. They also provide community to millions of customers, many of whom will be visiting their bookie to witness the Grand National.”

How It Works

  • Each MP places a £50 bet on a Grand National horse.

  • Winnings are donated to a local or national charity chosen by the MP.

  • If the horse doesn’t win, a £250 donation is made anyway.

  • Participating MPs are encouraged to place their bets in person to support local betting shops.

When Is the Grand National 2025?

This year’s Grand National will be held on Saturday, April 5, with the main race scheduled for 4:00 PM and expected to conclude by 5:30 PM. The event continues to attract millions of viewers across the UK and globally, making it a prime opportunity to merge entertainment with charitable giving.

Supporting Communities Through Betting

The BGC Charity Bet initiative is a reminder that responsible betting and community support can go hand in hand. By combining the national excitement of the Grand National with targeted charitable giving, the campaign reinforces the value of the betting industry as a contributor to social good.
